The MJLD’s nominated charity for 2011/2012 is Clatterbridge Cancer Research.

Since 1980 Clatterbridge has funded world-class genetic research into understanding the causes and most effective treatments for cancer patients.  Clatterbridge’s team of leading laboratory scientists is based at the Liverpool Cancer Centre on London Road in the heart of Liverpool.  The team investigates cancers including brain, breast, head and neck and research the genetic aspects behind the causes of cancer with a view to developing more effective, personalised treatment for each patient. 

As a local charity, Clatterbridge Cancer Research is dedicated to reducing the disproportionately high cancer incidence and mortality rates in the region by giving the people of Merseyside and Cheshire the best possible chance of fighting cancer.  They need in excess of £2million each year as a grant making body to continue their vital work to support a team of 15 scientists.  Clatterbridge is an independent charity that receives no government funding and relies solely on the donations to advance their cancer research.

Over the course of the year, we will be running a number of fundraising events including fun runs, a charity quiz and, of course, the MJLD annual charity ball.  We will also be encouraging members to participate in Clatterbridge’s own events such as the Midnight Candle Walk in Sefton Park in November and the Chick Run 5k next Easter (perfect for those wanting to get in shape for the ball!). 

Kate Gomery, the MJLD Charity Representative, says “We have set ourselves a target of £2,500 for the year and I really hope the generosity and team spirit of the MJLD members means that we achieve that ambitious sum”.  Donations can be made online at  www.justgiving.co.uk/mjld
