JLD Raleigh International Project – Volunteer Needed
In association with Raleigh, the National JLD are organizing a pilot expedition to Borneo to take part in a project to provide clean drinking water to the local community.
The JLD are looking for a volunteer to participate in the project due to an unexpected withdrawal.
General Details
The project is a 16 day pilot expedition to Sabah, Borneo which will see a team of 12 volunteers work together with Raleigh and the local community based NGO on a community project in a remote part of Borneo situated within 6 hours of Kota Kinabalu.
The team will be working with members of the community to build a gravity water feed system to provide the community with their first clean source of drinking water. The project will take approximately 7-8 days, following which, the volunteers will plan and hold a workshop with junior lawyers from Sabah to discuss legal ethics and the Rule of Law in today's world. This is an opportunity for the junior lawyers to exchange ideas and information about the development of the law, the maintenance of high standards of legal education on a global level and the promotion of human rights including access to justice.
The main aims of the programme are to:
- Establish a public service project for the Junior Lawyers Division which will benefit local communities around the world by working in partnership with Raleigh International;
- Use Raleigh development consultants to facilitate the development of a training plan for each delegate. This plan will aim to increase confidence, gain a sense of achievement and strengthen the existing Junior Lawyers Division network. Individuals will also develop such skills as team-working, communication, self-awareness and leadership;
- Provide an opportunity to discuss legal ethics and the Rule of Law with junior lawyers in Sabah and exchange , ideas and establish relationships and most importantly a continuing dialogue on legal development issues;
- Promote the work of the JLD and raise its profile both in the UK and internationally.
Specific Details
The group will be leaving London Heathrow on the evening of 22nd October (9.20pm) to fly to Kota Kinabalu via Seoul and will be returning on 8th November (00.30) arriving back in London at (16.20)
Benefits
The programme integrates a charitable mission with high impact personal development and will raise the profile of the Junior Lawyers Division by adding an exciting and worthwhile public service project which all the Junior Lawyers Division members will be able to participate in from 2010.
The opportunity to be part of the first pilot expedition is a once in a lifetime chance as each volunteer and their firms will receive national and local press coverage as this is the first ever project of this kind ever undertaken by junior lawyers internationally.
CPD accreditation will be given to those junior lawyers who have been admitted as solicitor of The Law Society of England and Wales. The amount of accreditation is going to be at least one year's worth of CPD points but could be two depending on the final decision of the SRA. In addition, participation will ensure an incredible boost to your CV and provide the volunteer with a priceless experience.
Requirements
Volunteers are required to raise the sum of £2,750 to take part, but given the timescales the other group members will try and assist the latecomer volunteer as much as they can. The JLD is planning a launch and fundraising dinner on 23rd September at the Law Society (details will be available shortly). The flight is not included in the fundraising but the cost is £595 which includes two nights accommodation in a hotel rather than a hammock in a jungle! Kit and inoculations are necessary and further information is available as to what is needed.
Fundraising activities range from pub quizzes, race nights, half-marathons, bike rides, car boot sales, local group events etc and we have plenty more ideas to share! The volunteer can be assured that the MJLD will assist in as many ways as possible.
If you think that you would like to take part in this fantastic project, then please do not hesitate to email a.v.checchi@gmail.com for further information.
